VANGUARDIA :  

Movement of Cuban art that from 1926 to 1949 influenced every aspect of the Cuban scene. 

The vanguardist reaction of the 20's, started a new movement for cuban painting. This modern movement had it's first and most important exhibit in 1927, sponsored by 'Avance' magazine. The starters of the Cuban vanguardia were Eduardo Abela, Victor Manuel, Antonio Gattorno and Carlos Enriquez, among others.

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM :  The Consciously American Style of art which emerged in New York during the 1940s and remained dominant until the late 1950s. It was essentially an amalgam of ideas borrowed from Surrealism (most of whose leaders lived in exile in the US during WWII) and more strictly American concepts about the importance of the pioneering individual, particularly in the liberation of art from tradition.
